Go big on renewables

Go all-in on energy co-ops

A clean energy revolution is underway. We want you to be part of it. Cooperatively-owned energy can build a more equitable and prosperous future for everyone. The Government has big plans for renewable energy and wants communities to be at the heart of this incredible transition. We do too.

The Government can unleash cooperative energy in three easy steps:

tick
Stop co-op members paying green energy levies on their own green power
tick
Stop taxing green energy bill savings
tick
GB Energy loans for people on lower incomes

Democratised energy: Own Your Power

We’re thrilled by the government’s commitment to expanding community energy in the UK. Energy cooperatives have already shown their ability to provide tangible benefits to real people. By scaling up these projects, we can accelerate the transition to a cleaner, more affordable energy system and enable people to benefit directly from Britain’s amazing renewable energy resource.

Large-scale cooperative energy projects are crucial for achieving the Government's goal of cheaper, cleaner power by 2030. People-owned wind farms and solar parks can benefit thousands of people and unlock local community support; vital for deploying renewables at speed.

Democratised Energy

It’s time to go big on people-owned power

Thousands of households and businesses are already co-owning large-scale renewable energy projects with Ripple. Every individual member is contributing to something far larger than themselves: a clean, green energy landscape for the entire country.

To make people-owned power fairer and open to all, we’re asking the Government for help with the following:

Wind turbines and solar panels

A simple and accessible levy exemption for green energy ownership

Green energy levies are added to electricity bills to support renewable energy in Britain. People should not pay energy levies on electricity supplied to them from their own wind farm or solar park. A typical household could pay £2,000 to buy a share of a wind farm to supply their power, then pay a further £1,800 in levies to subsidise someone else’s wind farm. An exemption from the levies already exists, but we want it to be simple and accessible so everyone who owns part of a large-scale wind farm or solar park cooperative can benefit.

Stop taxing image

Stop taxing bill savings

People with home solar are currently exempt from paying tax on income from their panels. Yet, people who co-own wind farms and solar parks can face paying tax on their bill savings. For some members, this can reduce their savings by up to 40%.

Low cost loans image

Offer low-cost loans or grants via GB Energy

Everyone, everywhere deserves equal access to clean, affordable energy. Low-cost loans and grants will help make this possible, especially for those on lower incomes. While home solar remains out of reach for many, cooperative ownership of large scale renewables can be a more affordable solution.

To unleash cooperative energy and enable thousands to own their green energy, Ripple will continue to:

01.

Champion cooperative energy ownership as an affordable option for everyone wanting to be part of the climate solution.

We will keep speaking out against energy levies and tax policies that make energy co-ops unappealing for some people, while underscoring our core belief that green energy ownership should be open to everyone.

02.

Advocate for community access to large projects, the savings and environmental benefits they offer.

Energy co-ops must be able to work with large-scale projects to speed up the transition to people-owned renewables. Solar on your roof benefits your household but co-ownership of a solar park is BIG climate action. Scale matters.

03.

Supporting our growing community of co-op owners to secure maximum benefits.

We will continue working with more energy suppliers, securing the best quality projects, and looking after our members’ projects through construction and operation.
